G&L Build To Order USA L-1000 Tangerine Super light

Born from Clarence Leo Fender’s CLF Research company, founded in 1966, the G&L brand and instruments marked the final chapter of his legendary career when they were launched in 1980. G&L instruments benefited from his lifetime of creativity and innovation, and throughout the 1980s, his groundbreaking new instruments became icons loved by musicians around the world.

Today, G&L instruments continue to be crafted in his historic factory on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California – The Birthplace of Bolt-on™. Discover why Leo famously declared, “G&L guitars and basses are the best instruments I have ever made.”

A Legendary Heritage By the late 1970s, Clarence Leo Fender and his CLF Research company had completed his consultancy for CBS/Fender, designed and manufactured the original Music Man instruments, and were looking forward to launching a new brand.

Together with former Fender employees George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt, Leo launched G&L Instruments, incorporating advanced features derived from his decades of experience in redefining what was possible in an electric guitar and bass.

This L-1000 is a super lightweight and weighs only 3.34Kg

The New CLF Research L-1000 revives the essence of the iconic passive G&L bass from 1980, affectionately known by fans as the “wunkay.” This reimagined classic brings back everything players loved about the original while adding modern enhancements for improved performance and comfort.

The rounded, fast neck shape paired with the sleek feel of a vintage-style gloss finish delivers a familiar, comfortable playing experience that recalls the best of the original L-1000 design.

The clean, modern look of the original CLF/G&L headstock is faithfully reproduced, while the shimmering CLF Research knobs and elegant chrome control plate evoke the tactile charm of the early G&L era.

The lightness of the Empress wood body contributes to better ergonomics. The bass feels more balanced and easier to handle, making it suitable for players of all sizes and skill levels. The reduced strain on your shoulders and back enhances your overall playing experience, making extended performances more enjoyable and less taxing on your body. The body shape has been updated to the slimmer, mid-90s L-Series profile, reducing weight and improving comfort for long gigs or studio sessions. You’ll have no trouble powering through a 3-hour set while maintaining both tone and style.

At the heart of the L-1000 is its MFD humbucker, known for delivering a powerful punch, especially in its iconic OMG mode. Whether you’re playing fingerstyle grooves or laying down slap-heavy lines, the L-1000 offers a bold, dynamic sound that stands out in any mix.

While it retains the beloved vintage vibe, the L-1000 now features a modern dual-action truss rod and twin graphite stiffening rods for greater neck stability. Whether you’re gigging in fluctuating climates or just need reliable tuning and action, this bass is built to handle it all.

The build-to-order CLF Research L-1000 delivers the best of vintage G&L heritage combined with modern playability and reliability.
