G&L Guitars SB2 Build To Order USA 3-Tone Sunburst

Born from Clarence Leo Fender’s CLF Research company, founded in 1966, the G&L brand and instruments marked the final chapter of his legendary career when they were launched in 1980. G&L instruments benefited from his lifetime of creativity and innovation, and throughout the 1980s, his groundbreaking new instruments became icons loved by musicians around the world.

Today, G&L instruments continue to be crafted in his historic factory on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California – The Birthplace of Bolt-on™. Discover why Leo famously declared, “G&L guitars and basses are the best instruments I have ever made.”

A Legendary Heritage By the late 1970s, Clarence Leo Fender and his CLF Research company had completed his consultancy for CBS/Fender, designed and manufactured the original Music Man instruments, and were looking forward to launching a new brand.

Together with former Fender employees George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt, Leo launched G&L Instruments, incorporating advanced features derived from his decades of experience in redefining what was possible in an electric guitar and bass.

When Leo Fender introduced the G&L SB-2 bass in 1982, he aimed to create a straightforward, no-frills instrument packed with powerful innovations in pickup and bridge design. For players who value a minimalist aesthetic but crave a bold, beefy sound, the SB-2 delivers in spades.

The G&L SB2 with an alder body and rosewood fingerboard embodies a timeless pairing of tonewoods, offering a balanced sound with warmth, clarity, and depth. Here’s what makes this configuration special:

Alder has a well-rounded tonal qualities. It provides a smooth and balanced midrange, making it ideal for cutting through in a band mix. Its low-end response is tight and focused, ensuring that the bass lines stay punchy and well-articulated. Alder produces clear, bell-like highs without being harsh, adding a touch of sparkle to your tone.

Paired with the slim, comfortable neck, the rosewood fingerboard enhances both playability and tonal warmth. Rosewood naturally absorbs some of the high-end frequencies, giving your playing a smoother, rounder character with a touch of warmth. Combined with G&L’s Saddle-Lock™ bridge, the rosewood fingerboard helps maintain sustain and resonance, ensuring each note is rich and full.

This combination makes the SB-2 with an alder body highly versatile, capable of handling anything from warm, vintage grooves to modern, aggressive tones.

The SB2 retains a familiar body shape, but with subtle tweaks to its contours that improve balance and enhance comfort. The moment you strap it on, it feels instantly familiar yet surprisingly sleek. The slim, C-shaped neck with a 9 1/2″ radius offers a natural, easy feel, while the 21 Jescar 57110 medium-jumbo nickel-silver frets ensure smooth playability across the board.

At the center of the SB-2 is a reimagined pairing of split-coil and single-coil Magnetic Field Design (MFD) pickups, created by Leo Fender to push tonal boundaries. These pickups provide more punch and power while maintaining the clarity and finesse that players love. The 2024 update introduces a refined control system: dual volume knobs and a dedicated tone control. This trio of controls gives you the flexibility to craft everything from clean, articulate tones to raw, gritty growls, ensuring your sound is as unique as your playing style.

Leo Fender’s signature Saddle-Lock™ bridge design plays a crucial role in the SB-2’s sound, ensuring optimal string energy transfer into the body’s end grain for maximum resonance. This innovative bridge, combined with the powerful MFD pickups, results in an instrument that not only sounds incredible but feels alive in your hands.

The G&L SB2 brings the magic of Leo Fender’s unique reinterpretation of the classic P/J pickup configuration, offering the unmistakable tone, feel, and craftsmanship you’d expect from a “Latter Day Leo” creation.
