Dingwall ABZ 4 Matte Candy Red
In stock
The ABZ is all about smooth playability and sleek design. Its contoured body keeps things lightweight and comfortable, while the swamp ash construction paired with a bolt-on five-piece maple neck gives it plenty of punch and clarity.
The ABZ features Dingwall’s signature fanned-fret system—a game-changing design originally developed by Ralph Novak. By giving each string its ideal scale length, the result is tighter low end, more consistent tone across the neck, and an effortlessly natural feel.
The slim frets – a tip of the hat to Lee Sklar, who helped bring them into the Dingwall world. These narrower frets offer up a more organic, woody tone, smoother slides, and an overall quicker feel under the fingers. The ABZ comes stock with vintage-style ‘banjo’ frets—just like the ones you’d find on classic guitars from the ’50s and ’60s.
This one’s a serious player’s instrument—pro-level tones, killer feel, and eye-catching looks that hold up in any musical setting.
It’s the kind of design that quietly improves everything: tone, feel, and intonation. Dingwall didn’t go multi-scale for show — it’s all about function. The low notes stay piano-clear, even in drop tunings, while the high strings retain a lovely, elastic snap.
The chambered swamp ash body keeps things ultra-light without sacrificing resonance. This is one of those basses that feels like it disappears on your shoulder, but still punches like a heavyweight.
The neck is slim, stable, and super comfy. Fast players will love how effortless it feels, but it still offers enough chunk for those who like a bit of grip. The satin finish means your hand glides, and the fretwork is flawless — no jagged edges or dead spots here.
Hardware-wise, it’s all top-shelf: Hipshot® Ultralite tuners keep things stable without adding weight, a Neutrik locking jack ensures a solid connection on stage, and the custom Afterburner bridge uses a unique baseplate system that locks the saddles in place for rock-solid intonation and sustain.

Dingwall’s FD3 pickup setup, delivering a balanced and versatile range of tones that feel right at home in any genre. These passive pickups are wired to a 4-position Quad-Tone rotary switch, giving you instant access to a wide tonal palette
Each pickup can also be run in series or parallel mode thanks to individual mini switches, offering even more tonal flexibility. Whether you’re after punch, growl, clarity, or warmth, the ABZ delivers with ease—and always feels right under the fingers.
This Rupert Neve preamp brings a kind of graceful authority to your tone. There’s depth in the lows, but it never bloats. There’s clarity up top, but without a trace of harshness. It enhances without ever stealing the show.
The low end gets rounder and deeper, but still stays tight. The highs open up with air and presence, but none of that glassy zing you get from over-hyped EQs And most importantly the midrange stays honest. It doesn’t mess with the natural voicing of your pickups — especially the Dingwall FD3-Ns, which already have that sweet, punchy mid character built in.
It’s like giving your bass a world-class recording channel, without losing its soul.
In true boutique fashion, the layout is straightforward and intuitive — nothing there you don’t need, and everything voiced with intention:
The Controls are Volume, Quad selector, Tone, Bass, Treble
The Passive Tone (works even when the preamp’s engaged — perfect for fine-tuning the top end)
The Bass EQ – Voiced around 40Hz, with a super smooth, wide curve. Adds weight without wool.
The Treble EQ – Centred at 4.4kHz, designed to enhance snap and definition without bringing out finger noise or fizz. What you won’t find is a mid knob — and you won’t miss it either. The whole circuit is tuned to let the Dingwall pickups breathe, with all the harmonic content you could want already baked in.
The Neve preamp runs at 18 volts, which means you get headroom for days — no clipping, no squashing, just clean, powerful signal. It’s whisper-quiet, beautifully dynamic, and makes DI’ing straight into a desk feel just about right.
From warm fingerstyle lines to aggressive pick attacks, this bass adapts without needing much tweaking. it keeps things simple and honest. You plug in, and you get your tone — but more focused, more alive.
The look is stealthy and sharp — a touch of modern aggression, but still tasteful enough to sit in any genre. Nothing flashy for flash’s sake. Just clean lines and thoughtful design.
