Holger Stonjek is a man that lives and breathes bass guitars and has been building basses since 1986. He has done it with such massive success that Sandberg is now one of the biggest brands in the bass community.

The focus from Sandberg has always been to produce high-quality instruments at an accessible price point. Hence you get a great and well-balanced bass for the money every single time when you choose Sandberg.

Alder is the go-to wood for a reason. It delivers that perfectly balanced tone with a punchy midrange, ensuring your low and high frequencies are equally represented. This makes alder an ideal choice for a solid, versatile foundation, giving you that warm, full-bodied sound that’s perfect for any genre.

Alder’s natural warmth and resonance provide a rich, enveloping sound that just sits right in any mix. It’s all about that smooth, deep tone that can fill the space without overwhelming it.

Ebony is a beast when it comes to clarity and articulation. This fingerboard material gives you that sharp, snappy attack, ensuring every note cuts through with precision. It’s perfect for fast, intricate playing where every detail matters. Plus, the dense grain of ebony adds to the sustain, letting your notes ring out with a clean, defined edge. The density of ebony not only boosts sustain but also brings a bright, articulate top end that perfectly complements the alder body’s warmth. This means your highs are clear and sparkling, ideal for solos and melodic runs that need to stand out.

When you pair the warm, resonant alder body with the bright, articulate ebony fingerboard, you get a harmonically balanced instrument. The alder provides that solid, inviting warmth, while the ebony ensures every note is delivered with sharp, precise clarity. It’s a match made in tonal bliss.

This combination is killer for versatility. Whether you’re laying down smooth jazz lines or ripping through some hard-hitting rock, the alder and ebony combo gives you a balanced tone that can handle it all. The alder gives you that robust foundation, while the ebony fingerboard provides the brightness and definition to cut through any mix.

The VM5 is in some ways a very classic instrument where the focus is on a beautiful round and warm sound with a lot of body to it.

Sandberg VM5 Gold Green Line

The Greenline series by Sandberg is a commitment to sustainability without compromising quality. These instruments are crafted using eco-friendly practices and materials, ensuring that each bass not only sounds and plays beautifully but also minimizes environmental impact. The use of locally sourced woods and environmentally conscious production methods sets the Greenline series apart. Sandberg select woods with unique character—distinct marks, grains, and colorations—to create more responsible instruments. As part of this sustainable initiative, Sandberg are collaborating with UNITED KIDS FOUNDATIONS FOREST to plant a tree for every Greenline series instrument sold. These trees will be planted locally in the picturesque Harz Mountains.

The VM5 is equipped with Sandbergs own pickups.
The split coil pickup in the neck position delivers a warm, vintage tone with deep, throaty lows and a punchy midrange, reminiscent of classic P-bass sounds. The humbucker in the bridge position adds power and growl, perfect for cutting through dense mixes with clarity and definition. Together, these pickups offer a wide range of tonal possibilities, from smooth and mellow to aggressive and biting. In other words you can go from the more classic sound of the single coil to the more powerful and punchy sound on the bridge pickup.

The preamp is Sandberg’s own 2-band EQ Active/Passive, which plays a pivotal part in that classic Sandberg sound.

All in all a really great bass that will make most bass players feel at home after playing their first note on it.
